A sore throat can be a real nuisance. Whether it’s a scratchy feeling that makes swallowing difficult or a persistent ache that won’t go away, it’s a common illness that most of us have experienced. They always seem to turn up when you’ve got plans and are often the first noticeable sign that you’re coming down with something.
While a sore throat can be uncomfortable, it doesn’t always require a trip to your GP. In fact, at Gaiger Pharmacy in Sutton we can help you manage your sore throat symptoms without your GP, thanks to the Pharmacy First scheme!
Symptoms of a sore throat to look for
A sore throat can have a range of symptoms, and they can vary from mild to severe and how many are present from person to person. As with all illnesses there are so many things that can change how you experience a sore throat but the most common symptoms include:
- A painful or a scratchy sensation in the throat
- You may feel pain when you swallow food or even your own saliva.
- Sometimes, your tonsils may look red and feel swollen. You can check this by using a mirror to look towards the back of your throat.
- If your throat is particularly sore, you might notice your voice becoming hoarse or weak.
- You might see white patches or pus on the tonsils. This is less common but is something to let your GP or pharmacist know you’ve seen.
Most sore throats are caused by viral infections like the common cold or flu, and they usually go away on their own within a week. If it lasts longer, or your symptoms get worse, knowing when it’s more than just a simple sore throat is important.
When Is It Likely Tonsillitis?
Tonsillitis is an inflammation of the tonsils, and it can be easy to confuse with a sore throat. The key differences between a sore throat and tonsillitis are:
- A severe sore throat, more intense than the pain of a typical sore throat.
- A fever over 38°C is often a sign that your body is fighting off something more serious than a cold.
- Swollen lymph nodes in the neck that can be tender to the touch.
- You could have difficulty opening your mouth suggesting your tonsils are severely swollen.
- You may notice that you have bad breath
If you have these symptoms, it’s best to visit your GP as you might need antibiotics. If you can’t or don’t want to visit your GP but you’re unsure about your symptoms, speak to our pharmacists who can help answer your questions.
When to Speak to a GP About Your Sore Throat
While many sore throats clear up on their own, there are times when you should see a GP. See your GP about your symptoms if:
- Your sore throat has lasted longer than a week
- A sore throat accompanied by a high fever
- If you’re getting sore throats frequently, a GP can help determine the underlying cause.
If you’re having difficulty swallowing or breathing it’s a medical emergency and you must go to A&E and call 999.
