Emergency Contraception Sutton

How does the morning after pill work?

Morning-after pills work mainly by delaying or preventing the release of an egg from the ovaries, called ovulation. They do not end a pregnancy that has already started.

This is why it’s so important to take the pill as soon as you think you might need it to give it the best chance to work and delay the egg releasing. Unfortunately, it won’t be able to stop a potential pregnancy if you’ve ovulated. It can help your pharmacist decide if this is the best method of emergency contraception for you if you can let us know the date of your last period.

Who can take the morning after pill?

The morning after pill is not right for everyone, but we find that most people can use it to safely prevent a pregnancy. It is possible to take the pill even if you can’t take hormonal contraception.

In some cases it might not be suitable for you, things that can impact this include your weight and other medications you may be taking. Be sure to let your pharmacist know any medicines you’re taking that might effect the effectiveness of the contraception.
