The two groups who qualify
Under the 2026 programme, the free NHS meningitis B vaccine is offered to:
- Year 13 leavers in summer 2026, specifically those born between 1 September 2007 and 31 August 2008. Everyone in this date-of-birth range receives the offer, whatever they do next.
- People under 25 starting university or moving into some residential further education for the first time in autumn 2026.
Both groups need two doses for protection, given at least four weeks apart. The vaccine is also already free, separately from this programme, for babies born on or after 1 May 2015 and for people with certain high-risk medical conditions.

A student who took a gap year and is now starting university for the first time at 23 is likely covered, because the offer is for first-time starters under 25. A second-year student who missed the chance last year is not covered, even though they live in halls. A sibling who is the same age but already at university is treated differently from one who is just starting. And an adult who simply wants the protection, perhaps because they live in shared accommodation, falls outside the free offer entirely. If you do not qualify, here is your option

If you are eligible, you do not need to do anything complicated. Year 13 leavers are contacted directly by the NHS through the NHS App, text, email or letter. First-time under-25 university starters can book through participating community pharmacies once appointments open in mid-July, with first doses from the end of July. Take the offer up when it reaches you, and aim to complete both doses before term.
