In June 2026 the government announced a one-off meningitis B vaccination programme for young people in England, to run before the new academic year. If you have a school leaver or a soon-to-be student in the family, it is worth understanding exactly how the scheme works, because it is targeted rather than open to everyone. Why the programme was introduced
The decision followed a rise in meningitis B cases. The Kent outbreak earlier in 2026 was the largest and fastest-growing ever seen in the UK, and there were further clusters in places such as Weymouth and Reading. UK Health Security Agency figures recorded 313 confirmed Men B cases in England in 2024/25, which made up around 83% of all invasive meningococcal disease cases, with young adults, teenagers and infants most affected.
Cases of this disease tend to peak in October and November each year, which is exactly when first-year students are settling into shared accommodation. The one-off programme is designed to protect those at highest immediate risk ahead of that autumn peak, while the JCVI considers whether a longer-term programme is needed.
Who is eligible for the free NHS vaccine
Two groups qualify for the free NHS meningitis B vaccine under the 2026 programme:
- Everyone completing Year 13 in the summer of 2026, born between 1 September 2007 and 31 August 2008. This applies whatever your plans after school, so you do not have to be going to university to qualify.
- People under 25 starting university, or moving into some residential further education, for the first time in autumn 2026.
Postgraduates and anyone starting a second or later year are not covered. Most international students fall outside the scheme too, although those under 25 entering their first year are advised to have a first dose in their home country where possible. The key dates
The timing is tight, so it helps to have the milestones clear:
- Mid-July 2026: bookings open.
- End of July 2026: first doses available, including at participating community pharmacies.
- August 2026: second doses given, at least four weeks after the first.
Both doses are needed for protection. People eligible in the Year 13 group are contacted directly by the NHS through the NHS App, by text, email or letter, depending on the records held. Under-25s starting university for the first time can book through participating pharmacies once appointments open.
What to do if you are not eligible
Plenty of people who would like the protection do not fit the criteria. Returning students, postgraduates, adults, and teenagers who missed the baby vaccine and are not in the Year 13 window all fall outside the free offer. If that is you, you can still get protected privately, and you do not have to wait.

Is the 2026 NHS Men B programme permanent?
No. It is a one-off, time-limited programme. The JCVI is reviewing whether a longer-term programme should follow, but for now the offer is limited to the eligible groups this autumn.
I am a returning second-year student. Am I covered?
No. The programme covers first-time university starters under 25 and Year 13 leavers in the date-of-birth window. Returning students are not eligible, but can be vaccinated privately at Gaiger.
How will I know if the NHS is inviting me?
